Banal

In the 8th grade I told another student while reviewing a book that, “I couldn’t make it through the banality of the dialogue.”
This rat fink mental midget promptly went to the teacher and told on me for profanity.
The teacher sent me to the principals office. We were on a first name, no need for introductions basis.
I told the principal my story and I could see him mentally weighing his options. If he punished me for having a more expansive vocabulary than my classmate and teacher he was going to have to deal with my dad. That would not end well.
If he sent me back to class without punishment he was undercutting the teachers authority and questioning his intelligence.
He decided to send me out to sit in the hall until class was over and then continue on with my day as if nothing had happened. And he asked me not to use the word again.
Me: “Why not?”
Him: “Because it confuses people.”
Me: “That doesn’t seem like a very good reason.”
Him: “Because I don’t want to see you again.”
Me: “Good enough. I won’t use it again.”

Practically a feel good ABC After School Special right there. I get all choked up thinking about it.
